June in the Pacific Northwest is pretty magical.  Pretty peonies are popping up in gardens, the heady scent of roses is ever present, and not all the beautiful rhododendron blooms have left us for the summer yet.  It seems like every plant is showing off, each celebrating the joy of being alive.

It’s time for our community to celebrate this joy with the Portland Interfaith Gospel Choir!  They’ll be performing their 2nd Annual Spring Concert in our Sanctuary this Saturday, June 1st at 5pm.

The choir’s rehearsals sound more amazing each week, and it promises to be a jubilant evening of music and community.  Their mission statement tells of their radical inclusiveness and commitment to spreading peace:

Our mission is to employ Gospel music to express the power of spirit and bring a message of faith, hope, love and joy to our community, the country and the world; to exemplify through interfaith multiracial and multicultural membership the principles of equality, justice, peace, unity and cooperation; and to serve as a model for what is possible among people.

So beautiful.  And such a wonderful fit for the TaborSpace community, which endeavors to build relationships among all Portlanders – no matter how different they may be.

As with last year, there is going to be a bake sale to support the choir after the performance.  There are some really talented bakers in the group, so make sure to bring your appetite!  And get here early for seats…last year there was standing room only!

Doors open at 4pm.  Tickets are $15-20 sliding scale.  Kids free!

For those of you who folded paper cranes and wrote prayers for peace…thank you!  And for those of you who didn’t, you’re in for a fantastic surprise next week!

Mary Louise Ott, a Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church member, organized the art installation/peace project for which the cranes and prayers will be used.  A table inviting both church and community members to fold cranes on pretty sheets of handmade paper was set up in the Sanctuary for about a week.  People were also asked to “write messages, prayers, and/or blessings” focused on how we can be “Peacemakers, Reconcilers, Community Builders, Collaborators, and bring Shalom to the world.”

The birds and blessings will first be displayed in the Sanctuary for Pentecost, which is on Sunday May 19th.  This is a day when Christians reflect on the Holy Spirit empowering believers to “speak a bold message of Love, Joy, Peace, Justice, Patience, Compassion, Generosity, and Faithfulness.”  Christians believe that on Pentecost, Jesus descended upon his apostles in the form of a dove and filled each with the flame of his love and wisdom.  Correspondingly, the origami birds have been folded from warm-hued papers.

After Pentecost, the birds will move to the Commons for all to enjoy!  No matter what our religious beliefs, Mary Louise believes that “peace, reconciliation, community, [and] collaboration are all words we should ponder in these days of constant conflict.  Mt. Tabor is a community that can bridge the differences between people of all backgrounds and can be a healing presence in the larger community.”
